Intermediate part I & II Result Cancelled for all education boards of Punjab, New Result to be announced in 45 Days..

LAHORE: The Punjab government on Saturday had to cancel the results of the Intermediate Part-I Annual Examination 2011 of all the eight examination boards of the province, after thousands of students took to the streets in different cities to protest against grave errors in their results.
The decision was taken by Punjab Chief Minster Shahbaz Sharif in a meeting held on Saturday. The chief minister also ordered a judicial inquiry into the result fiasco, with an assurance that stern action would be taken against those responsible.
The provincial metropolis - like other cities - also turned into a battlefield when protesting students became violent and tried to forcibly enter the offices of the Board of Intermediate & Secondary Education (BISE) Lahore, condemning the officials of the board.
A contingent of police, however, stopped the protestors who later gathered outside the board offices, blocked the road and strongly protested against BISE officials for errors in their results.
Earlier, Punjab Education Minister Mujtaba Shuja ur Rehman, after a meeting with a delegation of protesting students outside the Lahore Board office, announced the cancellation of results of the Inter Part-I exam of only four boards - Lahore, Gujranwala, Faisalabad and Multan. He had announced that new results would be announced in two months.
However, the chief minister directed the officials concerned to declare the new results within 45 days. He also ordered free rechecking of papers of Intermediate (Part-I & Part-II) Annual Examination 2011 candidates and directed the officials to complete the task in 20 days. Normally, the board charges Rs700 as rechecking fee for one answer book.
It is pertinent to mention that Intermediate Part-I results were announced on October 17 while Intermediate (Part-I & Part-II) on September 10. An overwhelming majority of students of both the exams had complained about grave errors in their results.
This aspect of errors is quite evident from the fact the BISE Lahore had to revise the list of position holders on September 11 just one day after the announcement of Inter (Part-I & Part-II) result as a student, who was awarded 29 marks in the subject of Education, had scored 93 marks. Similarly, a candidate was awarded 52 marks out of 50 in the subject of Pakistan Studies.
Now, in the Part-I result, there have been blunders. Some pre-engineering students were awarded marks in the subject of Biology (which they cannot opt for) while the pre-medical students were given marks in Mathematics.
Students have been complaining that they were shown absent in some subjects despite the fact they had attempted the papers. Besides, there are hundreds of students whose results were placed in the Result Later (RL) category.
It is also important to mention here that the Punjab government recently suspended BISE Lahore’s former chairman Prof Dr Akram Kashmiri and controller of examinations Syed Ijaz Naqvi over the issue.
The result fiasco is said to be a result of the computerized system recently adopted by all the eight boards of the province. The Punjab government had engaged an IT consultant Dr Majid Naeem for the purpose who was reportedly a relative of the PML-N leader. Sources in the BISEs claim the government did not take any action against him owing to his close association with PML-N leader Ishaq Dar.
Talking to The News, Mujtaba Shuja ur Rehman said as the fate of Part-I students was attached to their performance in Part-II, all such candidates would be automatically promoted to Part-II.
He vowed that stern action would be taken against all those responsible for playing with the future of innocent students.

Mujtaba, however, said Dr Majid Naeem was not a relative of Ishaq Dar as he himself had confirmed this from Dar.
Our correspondents add: Meanwhile angry demonstrations were held in many cities of Punjab against the alleged massive errors in the recently announced Intermediate Part-I result.
The most violent demonstration took place in Gujranwala where thousands of students set ablaze the building of the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (BISE). Students carrying placards and banners reached the board offices in small groups from different colleges and staged a demonstration. They also blocked the roads and then forcibly entered the main gate and set on fire the main building comprising a hall, a store and a computer section. As a result, the entire record was reduced to ashes.
A heavy police posse arrived but the protesters pelted stones at them. The policemen fired teargas shells and resorted to firing into air to disperse them. At least 20 students and 10 policemen were injured in the clash, which continued for several hours.
Due to severe teargas shelling, the chairman and other staff of the board fainted in their offices. However, a majority of staff members vacated their offices and fled. The police arrested 25 students who were later released on the surety of their parents.
The board officials revealed that the board suffered a loss of millions of rupees while the 28-year-old record was reduced to ashes. They alleged that the police and fire brigade reached the scene very late, which resulted in a huge loss.
In Lahore demonstrations were started on Friday which continued on Saturday. A large number of students blocked main Ferozpur Road near Muslim Town Mor and other roads leading to BISE offices. Students from different colleges gathered in the morning and continued their protest till evening. Meanwhile, a large number of students of Punjab College, headed by Insaf Students Federation (ISF), gathered at Muslim Town Mor on Saturday afternoon and blocked main Ferozepur Road. They chanted slogans against the BISE authorities. The demonstrations caused severe traffic mess on major roads including Lawrence Road, Jail Road, Canal Road and Ferozepur Road for over three hours which added to the miseries of commuters. School-going students also got stuck on Ferozpur Road for over an hour as City Traffic Police failed to maintain the flow of traffic as usual.
Provincial Minister for Education Mujtaba Shujaur Rehman reached the office of BISE and held talks with a five-member committee of the ISF comprising Malik Waqar, Adeel Shafi, Waqas Chaudhry, Adil Rana and Hafiz Fayyaz.
The students presented three demands. One was about rechecking of papers without any additional fee. The second was about refund of fee to those students who had deposited fee for re-checking of papers. They also demanded removal of Dr Majid Naeem, the IT Consultant, as he had allegedly created the entire mess. The BISE chairman and education minister agreed to the demands after which the students dispersed.
Students from Toba Tek Singh continued their protest on the second consecutive day against flawed marking in Intermediate Part-I examination, conducted by the BISE Faisalabad. They chanted slogans against the board management. They demanded remarking of their answer books. Parents also staged a demo outside the press club.
In Sialkot too, hundreds of students of the Government Postgraduate College for Women on staged a demonstration against flawed result. They appealed to the Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif to order probe into gross irregularities.
In Bahawalpur thousands of students from different colleges staged a demonstration against the BISE Bahawalpur authorities. They demanded rechecking of their answer books by a third examiner without any fee. Hundreds of students of the Government Sadiq Girls Degree College boycotted classes and protested against the board.
According to APP, in Multan too scores of angry students held a demonstration outside the BISE Multan offices against errors in their Intermediate Part-I results. They were carrying banners and placards. They said that mistakes in results had ruined their career.
Online adds: Punjab government has declared inter part-I results null and void for all boards in the province.
This step was taken due to blunders in the results as the pre-engineering students were given marks in Biology and the pre-medical students were awarded marks in Mathematics, reported a private TV channel.
Apart from this, there are many other systematic errors in the results which compelled a large number of students across the province to take to streets and demonstrate against the Punjab government.
The education minister said: “We had introduced computer system for students’ facility but employees could not operate it due to lack of professional skills in this regard.”
He said that the students who would like to get their papers rechecked, they would have to file an application in the board and the department would cooperate with them in every possible way. He said we would try our best to satisfy them. http://www.biserwp.edu.pk/Result.asp
